The American Association of School Librarians (AASL)
2008 National School Library Media Program of the Year Award
Luella Elementary School Locust Grove, Georgia
Statement: "It is an honor for the Luella Elementary School library media center to receive the prestigious NSLMPY award for 2008. The LES library media center first opened in 2004 with an opening day collection that has quadrupled to its present numbers. By partnering with others, the LES library media center has been able to open doors for the students to books that support the curriculum and provide pleasure reading; provide multicultural resources and museum quality artifacts; highlight storytelling, reading, and listening events; provide an annual Veterans’ Day program; participate in the African American Read-In; and introduce national authors. Through special collections, the students enjoy books about and by Georgia authors, the local horse community, ballet, the Atlanta Motor Speedway and NASCAR. Ownership from members of the school, parents, and district has placed the LES library media center as the true hub of the school and community."
