The American Association of School Librarians (AASL)
2008 National School Library Media Program of the Year Award
Simsbury High School Simsbury, Conn.
Statement: All professionals seem in agreement that students need to become information and technology literate to succeed in the 21st century. What appears to be unclear among professionals is how to go about:
-
Making sure our students attain these skills; and
-
Measuring that our students have mastered these skills
In the Simsbury High School Library Media Center, all freshmen and all sophomores participate in “Assured Experiences” (guaranteed experiences) in Social Studies and Science. These assured experiences provide students with the opportunity to meet and master state and national standards in the content areas and in information and technology literacy. Media specialists and classrooms teachers work together to assess that students have mastered the necessary skills to become productive members of the workforce in the 21st century. At Simsbury High School we are proud to state that the school’s library media program is fully integrated into the schools curriculum.
