Editorial: September News, by Irving E. Rockwood. In academia, September heralds a new year; for Choice, this September brings new developments.

Economics and the American Family: A Review of Recent Literature, by Darius Conger, assistant professor of economics at Ithaca College. He may be contacted at dconger@ithaca.edu.

The nature and definition of the family is in flux in America. Conger begins by discussing works that trace the historiacl path to the current, multifaceted family landscape. He then examines various modes of family formation, including cohabitation and domestic partnership as well as marriage. Throughout, Conger considers the economic consequences of family formation and of changes to the family unit such as death or divorce. The cite list includes more than eighty resources.
