PEOPLE IN THE NEWSC&RL News, December 2007Vol. 68, No. 11 by Ann-Christe Galloway Lura Joseph, assistant professor of library administration and geology and digital projects librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has received the Geoscience Information Society’s Best Paper Award for her article “Image and Figure Quality: A Study of Elsevier’s Earth and Planetary Sciences Electronic Journal Back File Package,” published in Library Collections, Acquisitions & Technical Services, September–December 2006. David Pinto, library director at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey-Pomona, was elected chair of the VALEnj (Virtual Academic Library Consortium in New Jersey) Executive Committee. Pinto will serve a two-year term. Appointments Rand Bellavia has been named director of D’Youville College’s Montante Family Library, replacing the previous director Leon D. Shkolnik who retired earlier this year. He will be responsible for operation, planning, and development of the college library and will supervise a staff of 18. The library, housed in the former Holy Angels Elementary School, a West Side landmark adjacent to the campus, has 100,000 volumes and an annual budget of $600,000. Bellavia also serves as an adjunct professor at the college and as a visiting professor at the University at Buffalo. Bellavia was previously acquisitions librarian at the library for seven years and was a cataloger at Coults Library Services in Niagara Falls, New York, prior to joining D’Youville. Jan Chindlund has been named library director at Columbia College-Chicago. Before joining Columbia, Chindlund was manager/head librarian of the Global Consumer and Business Insights (formerly known as Business Research) Information Center at McDonald’s Corporation. Prior to her work at McDonald’s, Chindlund was assistant vice president and head librarian at Duff & Phelps, an investment advisory firm. Eloise Hitchcock has been named director of the Doris and Harry Vise Library at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. Margaret Anderson has joined the Texas A&M University Libraries as education and social sciences librarian. Jason Battles has been named head of Web services at the University of Alabama Libraries. Melissa Sergent-Button has been appointed business manager for the Albin O. Kuhn Library at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Robert Cartolano has joined Columbia University Libraries as director of the libraries information technology office. Mark Ehlert has been named contract cataloger, MINITEX, at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Sharon Favaro has been appointed bibliographic and metadata librarian for the Albin O. Kuhn Library at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Jason Fetty has been appointed reference librarian of the Ottenheimer Library at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. Mary Francis has joined Dakota State University’s Karl E. Mundt Library as reference and instruction librarian. Valerie Glenn has been appointed government documents and reference librarian/information consultant at the University of Alabama Libraries. Susan Graham has been appointed special collections librarian for the Albin O. Kuhn Library at the University of Maryland- Baltimore County. Yolanda Hood is the new youth collection librarian at the University of Iowa’s Rod Library. Rebecca Imamoto has been appointed research librarian for history at the University of California-Irvine Libraries. Mildred Jackson has been named associate dean for collections at the University of Alabama Libraries. Lisa Johnston is now librarian, physical sciences and engineering, at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Rebecca Kennison has joined Columbia University Libraries as director of the Center for Digital Research and Scholarship. Peter Kirlew is now biosciences librarian at the University of Minnesota Libraries. Sara Klink has joined Ashland University as a reference and instruction librarian. Kari Kozak has joined the Texas A&M University Libraries as science/engineering librarian. Beth Larkee is the new information technology and liaison librarian at Hollins University. Lindsey Loeper has been appointed visiting librarian for special collections at the Albin O. Kuhn Library at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Jill Parchuck has joined the Yale University Library as director of social science libraries and information services. Tim Peters has recently been appointed director of off-campus library services at Central Michigan University. Lisa Robinson has been promoted to head of cataloging and metadata services at Michigan State University. Todd Samuelson is now outreach curator at Texas A&M University’s Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. Laura Sare is the new government information librarian at Texas A&M University Libraries. Karla Schmit is now education and behavioral sciences librarian at Penn State University Libraries and assistant director of the Pennsylvania Center for the Book-University Park. Win Shih has been named head of library systems at the University at Albany Libraries-SUNY. Danielle Skaggs is the new coordinator of online instructional design at California State University-Northridge’s Oviatt Library. Steven E. Smith has been named associate dean for collections, scholarly communications, and development at the Texas A&M University Libraries. Jane Stephens has been appointed science/engineering librarian at Texas A&M University Libraries. Deborah Stansbury Sunday has been appointed associate university librarian for administrative services at the University of California-Irvine Libraries. Frederick “Rob” Tench has been hired as the acquisitions and preservation services librarian at Old Dominion University Libraries. Allen Townsend is now director of the Arts Library at Yale University. Luke Vilelle is the new public services and liaison librarian at Hollins University. Sonia Yaco has been hired as the special collections librarian at the Old Dominion University Libraries. Retirements Deborah M. Ebster, associate librarian and head of Universal Orlando Foundation Library at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, retired from the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries on June 30, 2007. She started her career at the Rock Valley College Library in Rockford, Illinois, as a public services librarian and coordinator of instruction. After 28 years, she decided to take her librarianship skills to the next level in a different environment as the public services librarian at the College of the Bahamas-Nassau, where she learned hospitality management and tourism. Ebster later accepted the position with the UCF Libraries’ faculty as the first head of the new hospitality management library. She has been recognized in numerous articles, including as the featured subject of “Building a Library for the Business of Fun,” in the “Job of a Lifetime” column in College & Research Libraries News (February 2007). Cheryl A. G. Mahan, university librarian, reference department, retired in early 2007 from the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries with 30 years of service. After several years at the Howard-Tilton Library and the internationally known Latin American Library at Tulane University, she was hired in 1977 at UCF (then Florida Technological University), where she worked in cataloging, interlibrary loan, and reference. Active in the library profession, with the university, and in her community, Mahan received UCF’s Excellence in Librarianship Award and served as a mentor and championed four colleagues to win the same award. Leslie A. Manning has retired as dean of the Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs after 27 years of service and 35 years as an academic librarian. Carla M. Summers, university librarian and head of the department of special collections and university archives, retired in late June 2007 from the University of Central Florida Libraries. She worked in Florida as an archivist, manuscripts librarian, and administrator for 30 years, first with the State Archives of Florida and then the University of Florida. Summers was the founding president of the Society of Florida Archivists, served two terms as treasurer of the Academy of Certified Archivists, and is currently on the Council of the Society of American Archivists, where she will continue to serve while maintaining her archives, special collections, and records management consulting practice. Deaths ![]() Paul Evered Baldwin died October 7, 2007, from complications of diabetes. Baldwin worked at a number of libraries in the San Francisco Bay area and later moved Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 1971, where he assumed various library administrative roles and eventually retired as associate university librarian from Simon Fraser University in 2001. Baldwin led the initiative to bring British Columbia postsecondary library card catalogs online and was among the first to recognize the potential of the Internet in enhancing library services.
