FAST FACTS

C&RL News, February 2007
Vol. 68, No. 2

by Gary Pattillo

Teens and media multitasking
Nearly two-thirds of the time young people spend reading or using the Internet, they are also doing something else at the same time—primarily eating, doing chores, talking on the phone, doing homework, or using another media. Young people are most likely to use multiple media together when they’re instant messaging (74 percent), surfing the Internet (74 percent) or playing computer games (67 percent), while they are least likely to do so when watching TV (17 percent of the time).
Ulla G. Foehr, “The Teen Media Juggling Act: The Implications of Media Multitasking Among American Youth,” The Kaiser Family Foundation, December 12, 2006, www.kff.org/entmedia/entmedia121206pkg.cfm. January 9, 2006

Semantic Web search engine
SWSE is a search engine for the Semantic Web. It provides the equivalent services for metadata-encoded documents that Web search engines currently provide for the HTML-Web. SWSE explores and indexes the Semantic Web and provides an easy-to-use interface through which users can find the data they are looking for. The Semantic Web uses metadata encoded in a document’s Resource Description Framework (RDF), a general framework for describing a Web site’s metadata.  SWSE currently indexes approximately 100,000 files.
