The cover illustration of a seated Tehuana is a gouache study by Mexican artist, author, and archaeologist Miguel Covarrubias, who was a key participant in the cultural exchange between Mexico and the United States after World War I. His vibrant brush and ink drawings of the newsworthy and trendsetting figures of the day were regular features in Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, and Vogue. Covarrubias’s Tehuana is from the University of Texas-Harry Ransom Center’s Nickolas Muray Collection of Mexican Art. Celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout 2007, the Ransom Center houses more than 36 million leaves of manuscripts, 1 million rare books, 5 million photographs, and 100,000 works of art.
