National Library Legislative Day 2007
Schedule of Events

Below is a tentative schedule of events for the 2007 National Library Legislative Day.


On Monday, April 30, there will be a pre-conference event sponsored by the Association of Library Trustees and Advocates (ALTA), and the ALA Washington Office. The event -- entitled "Introduction to National Library Legislative Day: Why Your Participation is Important; What to Do and How to Do It" -- is designed to provide tips on how to make an impact during Hill visits and to help with the organization of presentations to your legislators.

The pre-conference will be held in the ALA Washington Office First Floor conference room from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Please note the new location of the Washington Office is:

Briefing Day
Tuesday, May 1, 2007

Description:
This full day of issue briefings will inform and prepare participants for congressional visits the next day, May 2nd. 

Tentative Schedule:

8:00-9:00 am Coffee and breakfast, nametag and folder pick-up (State coordinators pick-up bags with folders and distribute folders to participants. Please see your state coordinator to collect the folders for your Hill visits)  
     
9:00-9:20 am Welcome and announcements  
     
9:20-10:00 am Fast track summary: hot issues and key messages for Congress (Office of Government Relations staff)  
     
10:00-10:15am BREAK  
     
10:15-11:00 am Plenary session  
     
11:00-11:15 am BREAK  
     
11:15-12:00 pm Topic to be announced  
     
12:00-2:00 pm LUNCH ON YOUR OWN

ACRL Luncheon at National Library Legislative Day
May 1, 2007, Washington, DC


ACRL will be hosting a luncheon for academic librarians from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the briefing day Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at the Holiday Inn on the Hill.  The luncheon speaker will be George L. Mehaffy, Vice President for Leadership and Change at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. Capitol Hill Office Visits
Wednesday, May 2, 2007

Where:
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.

Metro stop:
Union Station on the Red Line or Capitol South on the Orange Line

Description:
The day will begin with a short briefing and send-off for participants. Congressional office visits follow the send-off where you distribute the background kits/issue folders, personalized with stories and descriptions of programs in your states. We urge you to personalize your folders with handouts that describe your local programs and library stories to give to your congressional representative-local stories are most persuasive to Congressional members.

**Any participant and Congressional folders that are not picked-up on Tuesday MUST be picked-up Wednesday at the ALA Washington Office, 1615 New Hampshire Ave., First Floor**

There will be a wrap-up session late in the day for state coordinators to discuss the visits and your experiences throughout the day followed by a Congressional Reception.

Tentative Schedule:  

8:30-9:00 am Fast track summary and last minute questions for the Washington Office staff. (Location to be announced)
   
ALL DAY Congressional office visits
   
4:00-5:00 pm Wrap-up (Share feedback from your visits)(Longworth Bldg. Cafeteria, Room B223)          
   
5:00-7:00 pm Reception – Friends of Libraries U.S.A. will present an award to a Member of Congress who has supported libraries (Location to be announced)
