Introduction

Based on input and suggestions from the library community, the ALA Committee on Legislation (COL) has identified E-Government as an important legislative initiative for the 110th Congress. As government agencies at the local, state, and federal level increasingly move to the online world to directly provide services, tremendous opportunities and demands have been created for libraries. As part of continuing discussions within the library community, COL is working with other partners and stakeholders to develop a legislative proposal for introduction during the 110th Congress, to seek recognition and resources for libraries providing E-Government services.

The ALA Washington Office will also be working with various ALA units, to assess other types support (beyond legislation) that could be helpful to local libraries as they manage these new demands.

Recent Information

• John Bertot will be leading a discussion on the library role in E-government. Mr. Bertot is Professor of Information Studies and Associate Director of the Information Institute at the College of Information, Florida State University. His research spans library technology planning and evaluation, information and telecommunications policy, and E-Government. He has conducted a range of research broadly related to planning and evaluation of networked services funded by the U.S. Institute for Museum and Library Services, the American Library Association, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His publications focus on topics related to demonstrating the value of library services, E-Government, and Telecommunications Policy.

• An ad-hoc COL subcommittee has been created to work on E-Government service issues.  An E-Government Wiki has been created to allow ALA members to participate in the development of this issue.
