Template for FCC CALEA reply comments

The FCC currently has open a Reply Comment period for submitting comments regarding the extension of CALEA to "facilities-based broadband Internet access providers."

ALA's initial CALEA comments were filed with the FCC in November.

The FCC's Reply Comment period is now open through Wednesday, December 21, 2005.

The ALA encourages state libraries and library networks to file reply comments supporting ALA's CALEA comments. Filing comments is easy and can be done by selecting the "Submit a Filing" option on the right menu of the FCC's website.

  • Proceeding number for CALEA is: 04-295
  • For Document Type: Select "Reply Comments" from the drop down list.
  • Edit the template and you can then send it to the FCC. [Word .doc]

October 26, 2005

ALA has joined a coalition of public interest and business groups to challenge the FCC's extension of CALEA to broadband networks.

See the press release here.

The FCC released a major rule on the extension of CALEA to broadband networks. Libraries are not exempt from this rule, and the costs associated with CALEA compliance may have a major impact on public and academic libraries.

The rule is available here.
